Lancaster Farming News Article: January 2011 NEW EMPLOYEE: June, 2010 Sales Team Expands At Dairymen Specialty Company With Hire of Seasoned Dairy Industry Professional, Don Bowden
EVENT: 2/18/07 At 1:00am Sunday morning Gerald Garber (owner of Cave View Dairy) was awaken by the lights flickering at his house. A neighbor came to the door to tell Gerald his barn was on fire. The fire was contained and the firemen were able so save the parlor stalls only. The rest of the milking facilities and the 1200 amp electrical service were leveled. The fire was finally put out by daylight. Gerald Garber also called Greg Derrow (owner of Dairymen Specialty Co Inc) at 2:30am to come and evaluate the situation. It was a hard decision to move 500 cows to several surrounding milking facilities or to try to get the milking parlor up and running at home as soon as possible. Cave View milks their cows every twelve hours. The last milking took place around 5:00pm and was finished around midnight. Dairymen Specialty Co Inc pulled eight of their guys in at 4:00am to install a temporary power supply and milking facilities. The cows were milked again at around 12:15pm. No cows were hurt in the fire and all of the cows were milked out seven hours later than normal. Cave View’s Dairy Facilities ships around $5000 dollars of milk per day. Dairymen Specialty is working fast to get the cooling finished by Wednesday so that Cave View can ship milk again. The dairy will be built back in the same location. This dairy was approximately seven years old. It is a double sixteen Germania parlor with Afi-Milk meters and a 6000 gallon Mueller Bulk tank. Neighbors and friends came to help from miles away. Monte Heatwole and a crew of men helped with cleanup and doing whatever was needed. Keith and Paul Wilson (also owners of Cave View Dairy) worked hard to keep the rest of the farm operating. The ladies of the community fixed breakfast and lunch for all workers. This was greatly appreciated by everyone!
