July 2004 Virginia Tech Dairy Complex
Grand Opening
On
July 16, 2004, the Department of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech introduced
their new Dairy Complex, where Dairymen Specialty was recognized by former
Virginia Tech Dairy Farm Superintendent and complex director, Charles N.
Miller for their noteworthy contribution of long-term consultation and
outstanding equipment installation. These improvements are the first major
upgrade in over 40 years; and Dairymen Specialty provided the vast majority
of the equipment.
Featuring
a 232-cow free-stall research barn and a double-eight rapid-exit herringbone
center, Virginia Tech’s new dairy complex also includes the latest design in
waste management technology, including solid separation and composting, and
the recycling of wastewater for the flush system. Integrating the latest
technology available, odors are reduced through aeration.
During the July
16 event, more than 500 industry supporters gathered to celebrate the grand
opening at Virginia Tech’s Alphin-Stuart Livestock Arena in Blacksburg.
Dairymen Specialty provided complementary bus transportation to area
residents interested in being a part of the historical event.
